The £175,000 resurfacing project at K2 Crawley’s 3G football pitches has finished a week early.

The leisure centre’s Twitter account today (August 24) said the pitches in Broadfield had reopened for bookings.

A spokesman for Crawley Borough Council said the facility was due to reopen on September 1.

Councillor Chris Mullins, cabinet member for Wellbeing, said: “The 3G pitch is a wonderful facility for Crawley. It has been really successful since it opened nine years ago with tens of thousands of children and adults playing football on the surface.

“I’m delighted we’ve made this investment to renew the surface and I’m sure the footballers who use the pitch from September will enjoy playing on it.”

A spokesman said: “The 3G pitch and pavilion, adjacent to the Checkatrade Stadium, opened in 2006 following a grant from the Football Foundation.

“The pitch has proved extremely popular and was due for replacement, in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines and to ensure ongoing compliance to the FA Standard Code of Rules and use of 3G football pitches.

“The £175,000 project, undertaken by Support In Sport (SIS) Pitches, has seen the playing surface replaced with a 60mm FIFA 1 Star performance standard, the shock pad underneath repaired, the perimeter fence repaired, drainage replaced and associated tree works.”

The 3G pitch is managed by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Crawley Borough Council.
