Homes plan for empty motel

A PLANNING application has been made to demolish the Abbots Lodge Motor Inn at Bishopstone and build 44 new homes.

The Sussex Express revealed last year a bid by Brighton-based developer Phillip Temmerman to develop the derelict site, viewed by many as an eyesore.

However, some raised concern that the town would lose its last venue big enough for weddings and large meetings, and that hotel accommodation was needed to attract more visitors to the town.

Now an official outline application has been submitted to build 26 three-bedroom town houses, eight two-bedroom and eight one-bedroom flats and two bungalows.

Mr Temmerman told the Express he intended the development to blend in with its Downland and coastal setting and envisaged the flats having a curved, Martello tower-style fa ade.

The bid is due to be considered by the Lewes District Council southern area planning committee on March 12.
