Crews from Crawley, East Grinstead, Petworth and Reigate attended the scene.

They were soon joined by three additional teams from Haywards Heath, Horsham and Turners Hill.

Officers used 40 sets of breathing apparatus, three main jets, two hydrants and two monitors to help them extinguish the fire, which was affecting 40 tonnes of waste, a spokesman said.

A stop notice was issued on the incident at 6.55am today.

One crew will return to inspect the site this morning.

A county council spokesman said the Household Waste Recycling Site at Crawley would be closed this weekend as a result of the fire.

“We will release more information about reopening as it becomes available,” the spokesman said on Twitter. “Please do not visit the site until further advice has been issued.”
