Hundreds to pay their respects in Bognor Regis

Hundreds of residents are expected to gather around the Bognor Regis war memorial this weekend for the annual Remembrance Sunday service.

Those who go along to the 10.50am ceremony outside the town hall on November 9 have been urged to remember servicemen and women still alive as well as those whose names are on the war memorial.

Ron Anderson, the secretary of the town's Royal British Legion branch, said: "Sunday's service is about remembering those who have died but also those who are still with us.

"During this financial crunch, which affects us all, I would urge everyone to spare a thought for those of us who have served our country and lived to see today's cost of living spiralling on a fixed income."

The Legion has launched a return to rationing campaign, with Age Concern, including eight measures to increase the income of older people living in poverty.

Many former service personnel have been forced, through poverty, to ration everyday essentials just as they did during and after the second world war.

Mr Anderson said he and his wife dealt with 38 cases of individuals needing help during the year to the end of September.

A further four caseworkers also worked on the branch's behalf. The spending in the year on welfare-related issues came to 60,000.

This went on mobility aids, new accommodation, job retraining and other essential aspects of a decent lifestyle.

"It's really rewarding seeing the difference the money can make," Mr Anderson said.

"We can help people get things which they would not otherwise have known about. They deserve this help and that's what we are here for.

"That's why I would urge everyone to write to our MP, Nick Gibb, to urge the government to support our return to rationing campaign."
