A VILLAGE HUG FOR PEGGY: Peggy Spence has lived in Iden for 50 years, and she celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday 23rd July. We are proud to have Peggy in our midst. She is quite amazing, and if any of us were to possess half Peggy’s brain and wit we would be lucky people. Peggy doesn’t resemble a centenarian, she holds court, and to see her approach, we know that we are going to be enlightened, and have some fun. Last week at the W.I garden party, Peggy sat at the head of the table, amusing us with her quips. Everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’, and Anne Banning had made a special birthday cake. Peggy received a basket of roses. Her school-teacher’s brain has never dimmed, and she knows about, and worries about everyone else, greeting everyone with an aptness, peculiar to just Peggy. Family and friends gathered to give Peggy a special party on her birthday, supervised by her two daughters, Liz Pamboris and Rebecca Spence, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Peggy was the star of the show [but this is nothing new!] She looked very smart, in navy trousers and a floral top. Peggy, [God bless her] got her telegram from the Queen. We cannot beat that, but what can we do for this lovely lady? Send our love of course, and hearty congratulations from the entire village.

THEY NEVER FORGET TO BLOOM: Garden flowers follow each other, nose to tail don’t they, always blooming in the appropriate month [give or take a little global warming], and wild flowers follow suit, and yet we take for granted [unless we stop and think about it] how dependable they are. The Meadow Sweet and Privet- flowers blooming now smell divine, particularly on a warm day. If only we could bottle their scent [I’d be perfectly happy wandering around smelling like a privet hedge.] We get the whole spectrum, the whole nine yards living in Iden don’t we? [Jammy devils!]

THE WI AND THEIR HATS: Last week, the W.I garden party was held on Tuesday14th July. Everyone wore a hand-decorated hat, and looked very ‘fetching’, many hats decorated with fresh flowers, or personalised via a sewing basket The food was lovely .We were told to be minimalist [but Iden W.I doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘minimalist’, when it comes to food]. Our numbers seemed to have swelled recently, which is good. The more the merrier. Thank you Min for having us. [It’s always nice at Min’s!]

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion at Iden Parish Church, on Sunday 26th July, at 9.30 am.

ANNE’S RAINFALL: Anne Banning keeps us abreast of Iden’s rainfall. For the month of June, we had 0.92 inches. Thank you Anne.

DON’T FORGET IDEN FETE TOMORROW: As if we would! It will be a great day as usual. Iden Fete is tomorrow [25th July] at 1pm. The ‘Boot Fair’ always starts earlier in the day, and the whole atmosphere is festive, and relaxing. We can have lunch there [Dave Stoodely’s burgers and bacon are always good], and there will be teas, sandwiches, and cream teas in the pavilion, and ice cream vans, and you name it. Iden Playing field will be packed with activity for the whole family. The Fete epitomises ‘lazy, hazy crazy days of summer’. ‘Bargains Galore’ is a feature in itself [a gigantic jumble sale] Go into the ‘Bargains Galore’ enclosure, and you will come out suited and booted and ready for anything. There are fairground rides for the kids, a bouncy castle, a dog show and arena events. All we need to do is pray for sunshine

THE POP-IN: There will be a Pop-In, on Monday 3rd August, at 11am, in Iden village hall. It gives Iden residents an opportunity to be waited on with coffee/tea and biscuits, and to meet up with others from Iden., and put the world to rights!

BINGO: The next bingo is on Thursday 6th July in Iden village hall. Doors open at 2pm, Eyes down at 2.30.pm. Proceeds go to Iden village hall. There is a flier, a jackpot, a raffle, a tea half way through, and as many bingo books as you can manage. Everyone is welcome from Iden and the surrounding area. It’s always fun!

ALONE WITH OUR MAGGOTS!: This week I sat by the river bank at ‘New Bridge’, while my husband and grandson did some fishing. I’d brought enough food, spare clothes and medical supplies for an invasion, but they were too engrossed, and only nibbled at a sandwich aren’t wet-wipes the most amazing invention? [ Maggots and I have never seen eye to eye], and I made myself overseer of hygiene, insisting that they use several wet wipes before touching a sandwich. I always wonder what piece of protein has instigated a maggot’s growth, [it doesn’t bear thinking about!]. It’s all very well dying them pretty colours, but a maggot is a maggot in whatever garb. Anyway, it was idyllic watching the ripples on the water, and gazing at banks of ‘meadow sweet’. “Come on”, I said to my grandson, “eat a banana, and these pineapple chunks” [I worry about my grandchildren having their five a day while under my roof] All in all, I got the feeling that maybe I should have stayed home with my wet wipes. I was definitely not wanted on voyage. The two of them just wanted to be alone with their maggots!
