Industrial disease caused Aldwick Fells carpenter's death

A man contracted the industrial disease mesothelioma after working as a carpenter.

Ralph Skelly, of Aldwick Fells, started work as a carpenter and builder in the late 1940s, repairing wartime bomb damage.

An inquest held last week heard in September last year Mr Skelly, 83, started to experience increasing shortness of breath.

He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in July (2008) and was treated by specialists at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham and at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester. The inquest heard that he died on August 25, this year, at his home.

Assistant coroner for West Sussex, Michael Kendall, recorded a verdict of death from industrial disease.
