Stalls, a giant raffle and games helped to make money to go towards the specialist unit.

But the day also saw the unveiling of a bird bath in memory of the late Dr Marguerite Pennefather - a founder member of the Bexhill Voluntary Day Care Centres For The Elderly, which began at the Irvine Unit.

Hospital patient and open day organiser, Bob Halsey said: "People have been so kind. We have 130 raffle prizes and everyone; nurses, staff anf families have donated.

"I think we have a nice little success on our hands here."

Clinical matron Karen Turley, praised Bob, saying: "I only started two weeks ago and was told it's all in hand and I only needed to tie up odd bits. He has been wonderful."

Day centres chairman, Jill Halsall, paid tribute to Dr Pennefather.

She said: "She was one of the doctors who helped to set things up. She was marvellous - so intelligent and knew about everything and everyone."
