Divisional commander Chief Superintendent Paul Pearce said: 'We are increasing capacity at the front line while re-engaging with our local neighbourhoods.

'What better way to achieve both of these goals than by inviting the public into our police stations to undertake basic administration and other tasks.'

Superintendent Ken Probert added: 'They will greatly support our front line officers by filling the gaps to give a better all round service.

'The Health Service has successfully introduced volunteers into its everyday practices and several local hospitals have more than 500 volunteers who provide valuable support and assistance.'

By the end of the month, 37 people will be working to help officers at Seahaven stations and those in Eastbourne, Hailsham and Lewes.

A further 25 are expected to follow.

Supt Probert said: 'The contribution our volunteers make is both important and valuable to us. We want them to feel part of a team.

'Providing them with a full induction course and the relevant support mechanisms, with regular reviews built in, demonstrates our commitment to them.'
