Lead thieves strike at school

MORE than two hundredweight of roofing lead has been stolen from Cross in Hand Primary School.

Thieves broke into the school grounds in Sheepsetting Lane overnight between Wednesday and Thursday (August 29-30) to remove lead flashings from the flat roof of the school building.

The grounds were also entered the following night (Thursday, Friday, August 30-31) and more lead flashing taken.

A groundsman said the weight would have been in excess of two hundredweight.

He believes an angle-grinder would have been used and entry would gained via Mill Close at the rear of the building.

The incidents follow a series of lead thefts from buildings in Hailsham (including St Mary's Church and High Street shops.)

Police believe the thefts are due to the increasing price of lead on the scrap metal market.
