LEWES FLOOD SHOCK

LEWES flooded again on Thursday lunchtime (March 30) '“ nothing like the hideous event of 2000 but badly enough for the water to come within a couple of inches of entering some houses in Morris Road.

This time the culprit was not the river overflowing its banks, but what is suspected to have been a blocked culvert.

A massive underground culvert carries surface water from the Cliffe to the river.

This time, residents believe, a malfunctioning flap valve at the end of the culvert allowed river water during a very high tide to come back down through the system and return to flood the street.
