Life's very different in Finland as Felpham scouts discover

Life Finnish-style has been encountered by a group of Felpham scouts.

The 14 members of the 1st Felpham Sea Scouts spent up to two weeks in the Nordic country.

They were among 1,300 participants at the Satahanka camp. Of those, 800 were scouts and guides from around the world. The rest were adult volunteers.

Lewis Powell, the 1st Felpham Sea Scouts' camp reporter, said: "It was a fantastic experience and we met many other scouts from places like Russia, Tanzania and America.

"The home hospitality after the camp was the best time of the visit.

"It was good to see the way they do things in Finland.

"A lot of things are different over there, particularly saunas.

"The first thing I asked for when we got home was if we could build a sauna, because they are very common in Finland.

"The food was different to the English diet and took a bit of getting used to. Finland also has a lot more open space than the UK, with many interesting places to see."

The sea scouts had a long and arduous journey to the campsite at Sauvo.

But the time spent travelling proved worthwhile.

The activities at the camp began with small sailing boats and kayaks.

Camp challenges followed. Swimming and hiking '“ with oar marking, animal identification and nautical skills along the way '“ added to the fun.

A visit to Finland's oldest city of Turku was another highlight.

The home hospitality visit also focused on Turku and plenty of saunas along with a sailing trip and a beach party.
