Littlehampton in no shortage of festive fare with this orphanage show

Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and the Aldingbourne Trust, all benefitted from the two performances of At the Orphanage, by Littlehampton’s Edwin James Festival Choir.

This was the latest in the choir’s series of “Winter Wonderland” concerts, and featured a mix of numbers from Oliver and Annie, plus all the seasonal favourites, performed in front of an appreciative and enthusiastic audience which packed into St James’ Church , East Ham Road, Littlehampton.

Choir members were resplendent in Dickensian costumes, or else suitably clad as ragamuffins.

All the songs were sung with gusto, augmented with a great deal of lively audience participation.

There were very clever parodies on the seasonal numbers The Twelve Days of Christmas and Jingle Bells.

For the second half of the concert, St James’ Church, Littlehampton was magically transformed into a toyshop, by choir stalwart, Chris Allen.

A vast array of toys were displayed, together with two huge Christmas trees with twinkling lights.

The choir donned fantastic costumes to take on the guise of animals and clowns, as well as fairies, Smurfs and even gorillas!

Pat Franklin was outstanding as a “Doll on a Music Box”, and comedy was provided by Sandy Shiner, dressed as a airy Doll for the number Nobody Loves a Fairy When She’s Forty.

There was some beautiful harmonising from the choir in Scarlet Ribbons and ‘Somewhere in my Memory.

A grand auction of all the toys took place at the end of the show, with proceeds going to all three charities.

Father Christmas made an early visit and presented gifts to all the children in the audience.

Once again, the choir’s musical director, James Rushman must be congratulated on not only directing, but also providing the accompaniment for this uplifting Christmas extravaganza. It was obvious that a huge amount of hard work had been put into making this a very memorable show.

The choir’s next offering is a Sing-a-long Me and My Girl in the hall of St James’ Church, on Sunday, January 27, at 3pm. For more details or to reserve tickets, call 01243.542330. Don’t miss it!
