Littlehampton's curved stage is given global recognition

The humble structure, unveiled only a few months ago, is now standing proudly alongside futuristic skyscrapers and other modern marvels from across the globe as one of the world’s best buildings.

It has been shortlisted in the culture category of the World Architecture Festival, which will be taking place in Singapore, in October.

The news has come as a thrill to Littlehampton Town Council, which proved instrumental in backing the project.

Councillor Malcolm Belchamber, chairman of the town council’s community resources committee, said this nomination was a promising prospect for the town.

“I think it’s really going to put Littlehampton on the map,” he said. “It’s absolutely brilliant news.

“Who knows, we could be in all the magazines on the plane like the East Beach Café was.”

“I think Littlehampton’s seafront is certainly different from anybody else’s.

“We have got several really unique landmarks – the East Beach Café, the longest bench and now the Stage by the Sea.

“Soon, we will have the new river walk. So it’s brilliant news for the town.”

The two white, acoustic shells, which make up the Stage by the Sea, were designed by Flanagan Lawrence. Work was completed on the curved space in May despite a few delays in the project.
