Man fined after stealing from Gatwick driver

A man has pleaded guilty to stealing an Iphone from a Gatwick driver.

Crawley magistrates fined Mark Ayton, 53, of Ashen Grove Road, Seven Oaks, £55 and ordered him to pay £20 victim surcharge.

The court on Wednesday (May 27) heard Ayton stole the phone when he was collecting his car from the driver’s company on September 13 2014.

He had paid for the company’s ‘meet and greet’ service where people drop off vehicles to be later collected at the airport.

The court heard the victim asked Ayton to pay a £3 ticket after he parked Ayton’s car in the airport’s car park.

Melanie Wotton, prosecuting, said Ayton ‘took exception’ to the request and asked to speak to the man’s manager. She said he then pocketed the driver’s £300 Iphone.

Ms Wotton said: “[Ayton said] You can have the phone back if you pay the £3.”

Geoff White, defending, said the phone was recovered.

He said Ayton did not realise he had taken it until after he drove away with it.

He added Ayton was arrested on suspicion of the theft shortly before he was due to board a plane for his honeymoon. He lost £3,500 as a result, the court heard.
