A man has been ordered to pay £400 compensation after he burgled a commercial property in Crawley.

Robbie Burchell, 20, formerly of Strudgate Close, Furnace Green, pleaded guilty on Wednesday (May 27) to burglary other than dwelling - theft.

Crawley Magistrates’ Court heard he stole the tool from G Burley & Sons’s Ifield site on September 19 2013.

Melanie Wotton, prosecuting, said officers found entry had been gained through a broken toilet window in the building the day after.

She said the chainsaw which was stolen and valued at £400 was not recovered.

It was heard Burchell was not found at the time but identified a year later by finger prints he left at the scene.

JPs heard his prints were put on a database when he was sentenced for another matter.

Geoff White, defending, said Burchell had no income and a two-month-old child.

Magistrates made no order for costs and awarded the compensation to the grounds maintenance company.
