Marble madness returns to Battle

It's that time of year again - the traditional Good Friday Marbles Matches will be rolling out on the Abbey Green tomorrow.

Teams from pubs and other local businesses will gather for 'flick off' at 10am to go head to head in a bid to be crowned marbles champions.

This year 20 teams are expected to take part in the competition, which dates back to 1945.

And for the first time for at least ten years, Battle Town Council will be entering a team into the 2010 competition.

The official Battle Town Council team will be headed by Cllr Richard Jessop, with a mystery line-up still to be confirmed, whilst another group of councillors will be entering an unofficial team.

The Crazy Councillors team is made up of town councillors Richard Bye, Gary Honeysett, Chris Pike and Ron Harris and Rother councillor Kevin Dixon.

At 11.30am the children's Easter bonnet competition takes place, which organises have promised will be bigger than ever before.

Around 40 children are expected to take part in a mini-parade around the Abbey Green, with an Easter egg for all who pre-registered to take part.

Then it's time for the manic Marbles Scramble at 11.45am, with the children jostling for 1,000 shiny new marbles.

The event will finish at 12noon as the kings and queens of Battle Marbles are awarded their cups and medals.
