'Massive' fireworks display at carnival

This year's Uckfield Carnival on Saturday looks set to be the biggest and boldest yet with marching bands, magical tableaux, majorettes, flaming torches, fancy dress, processions and a massive fireworks display.

The day's programme starts at 9am with a fancy dress street collection in the High Street.

At 1.30pm the children's fancy dress procession accompanied by the carnival prince and princess, Holy Cross Scout and Newhaven Youth marching bands winds its way from the Victoria Pleasure Ground through New Town, up the High Street to Southview Drive.

This is followed at 2pm by the Children's Grand Procession from Southview Drive to the Holy Cross School field where fancy dress judging takes place (Uckfield Civic Centre is the venue if it rains).

The adults have their chance to impress everyone with their dressing up skills later in the day with adult's fancy dress judging at Elizabeth Gardens, Grange Road, at 6.30pm.

At 6.45pm tableaux assemble in Bell Lane and the grand torchlight procession starts in Grange Road at 7.30pm moving through the High Street, New Town, New Place, Harcourt, Vernon, Selby and Framfield Roads before reaching London Road via the High Street.

Among the marchers will be bonfire societies from Barcombe, Chailey, Crowborough, East Hoathly, Firle, Fletching, Hailsham, Maresfield, Mayfield, Rotherfield and South Heighton, as well as all the Lewes societies and groups from West Sussex and further east into the county.

Stevens Carnival Funfair will be open daily from today (Friday) to September 8.
