Cllr Bob Burgess (Con, Three Bridges) said he was keen to hear from anyone who would like to nominate an outstanding individual for recognition. Although it is still early days in his time as Mayor, Cllr Burgess has taken on board the experiences of others who have held the office and plans to hold an event towards the end of his term.

Cllr Burgess said he had been inspired to start his search by several articles which he had read in recent months.

They included the two heroes who leapt into Campbell’s Lake, Tilgate, to rescue Clive Whitehead after his electric wheelchair toppled into the water in July.

And then there was 16-year-old leukaemia patient, David Hayward, who passed his GCSEs despite taking his exams from a hospital bed.

Cllr Burgess said: “There are a lot of people who do an awful lot of things and they are not acknowledged.

“I read about the people who saved a man from drowning and a person who saved the woman from being hit by a train.

“Those are acts of heroism.

“And then there are the acts of courage like the lad who did his GCSEs while suffering from leukaemia.”
