Monofin Mermaids is the brain child of 24-year-old Sarah Jaban.

Her life-long obsession with the ocean and summers spent in Greece allowed Sarah to gain a scuba diving master qualification which enabled her to open her school.

“The idea manifested quite organically, my co-workers and I at the end of every day would get the tails and go in the water, gradually it gained attention so I introduced it to the diving centre,” she said.

“We bought lots more tails and then spent two seasons perfecting the course, games and talking to kids and parents.”

With more than 1,000 underwater swimming hours to her name, Sarah, along with her staff of mermaid instructors, is professionally equipped to guide the class in a safe and secure manner insuring everyone involved has a magical and memorable time.

“It launched in mid-February and within a few days BBC South East had picked it up and the whole thing just exploded,” Sarah said. “We are starting more weekly parties, I now have about six or seven available pools.”

An instructor gives children step-by-step instructions on how to swim and move like a mermaid.

Once the students know how to use their tails, underwater mermaid swirls, handstands and other techniques are taught to music.

They also provide The Mermaid Experience, a class which teaches children how to swim like a mermaid.
