Neighbours rally to support Littlehampton couple's fence bid

NEIGHBOURS have rallied in support of a Littlehampton couple, who are fighting to put up a fence on their own property.

Nikki and Glyn Barnett live on the corner of Fastnet Way and Southfields Road, and claim their open garden means vandalism, littering and anti-social behaviour.

However, they have twice been refused planning permission to block it off, as the estate was built with an "open plan" order attached.

No way to live

Nikki said: "We are on the corner plot, and without a fence, people can walk straight through, and use it as a short cut.

"We have found dirty sanitary towels, used condoms and broken glass in the garden.

"We have no privacy, and have to draw the curtains in the afternoon. It really is no way to live."

Neighbours' support

She has collected letters from almost 50 residents from Southfields Road, lending their support to a third application, which aims to put up a two-metre high fence.

This time the fence would be behind an existing hedge, to minimise the effect it would have on the street scene.

"We had word that the application was about to be turned down again, so I canvassed the street," said Nikki.

Residents have each signed a letter, stating they support the application, and denying that the fence would have a detrimental effect on the street.

Security concerns

"Not one person objected. I have collected 47 letters, and there are more to come."

The Barnetts have also received letters of support from councillors, including Littlehampton mayor, Alan Gammon.

He said he had concerns about the security of the property and the inability of the Barnetts to have the full use of their land.

Family garden

The first application was made soon after the couple moved into the house, just under two years ago.

"We want to create a family garden for my nieces and nephews, but there is no chance of that happening when it is used as a thoroughfare."

The application will be heard by Arun's development control committee on Wednesday, September 3.
