New base opened for fire cadets

Fire cadets in Bognor Regis have a new base.

The purpose-built unit has been constructed in the grounds of the town's fire station on West Meads Drive. It will be used by young people who attend Firebreak and fire cadet courses.

The facility replaces old temporary buildings in use for many years. It was formally handed over by Peter Evans, in charge of the county council's public protection work, and county fire officer Max Hood.

Cllr Evans said: "The new unit will enable young people to continue their education with our Fire and Rescue Service in a much improved environment."

The FireBreak and fire cadet courses are run by the county fire and rescue service as part of the county council's community safety strategy.

"The courses give young men and women the opportunity to learn a wide range of new skills within the framework of a uniformed disciplined youth organisation," said CFO Hood.

"They take in a structured training programme led by skilled instructors, many of them serving firefighters.

"The courses also aim to develop young people's awareness of the dangers faced in everyday life, while at the same time enabling them to give something back to the community they live in."
