Congratulations: Claire Evershed, Manager of Jempsons local in Northiam, won the ‘Best Communication to Customers’ category at the Convenience Retail Awards in London last week. Congratulations to Claire and all the staff – the award includes entrants across the UK and is awarded to the store that shows the most impressive level of customer engagement.

Farewell: Sadly, this week we see the end of Beckley Motors, leaving many of us bereft!! Trevor and his team have nurtured us through many crises as well as all the general stuff needed to keep us safely on the road, and our heartfelt thanks go to them all with warm wishes for the future. Thank you!

Spring Show: As we move into Easter week, the village is a-buzz with things to do! Firstly, celebrate Spring by taking part in or visiting the Horticultural Society’s Spring Show. Entries need to be in the Village Hall between 9 - 10.30am, then the Show opens at 2.30pm, with prize-giving at 4pm. I look forward to seeing the entries from the schools and Messy Church as well as all the vibrant colours of Spring.

The schedule is available online through the village website, and there really is something for everyone as you can enter with a single daffodil right up to a complicated flower arrangement. Even if flowers aren’t your thing, there are classes for vegetables, cooking, handicraft and photography. It costs 20p to enter each class, and there will be prizes! If you are having any difficulty, ring Alison (252525) or Linda (252984) who are always very helpful.

Choral Concert: Then on Sunday, we are fortunate to have a visiting choir coming to the village. Tongswood Chamber Choir will perform Allegri’s Miserere and other choral treasures for Passiontide on Sunday 29th March in St Mary’s Church at 6pm. Tickets are £10, or £20 to include a supper after the concert. Call 01797 260868 to check if there are any tickets left (especially if you would like the supper!).

Plant Fair: Great Dixter will be holding a Plant Fair on Saturday and Sunday 11-4. Plantsmen of world renown will be showing their wares – including our own Rotherview Nursery, specialising in camellias and alpine troughs. Although they have now moved to Hastings, they still give discount to Horticultural Society members or can supply through their website. I have a vested interest – I inherited quite a few of their camellias and they are flowering their proverbial socks off!

Coffee Morning: The monthly Village Hall Coffee Morning will be today (Friday) 9.30-11.30am and this time there will be an Easter theme, with a special raffle.

Footpath Walk: Meet in the surgery car park at 1pm to join the Footpath Group for a 5mile walk in Appledore on Sunday.

Huw Merriman: The Conservative candidate for Bexhill and Battle (and us!) is Huw Merriman, and he will be visiting Northiam on Tuesday 31st to meet voters, share his plans and listen to views. No booking is necessary, just turn up at the Village Hall from 7.30pm. Conservative District Councillors also hope to be present.

Women’s Institute: The WI meet for a guided walk round Burtons’ St Leonards on Friday 27th. Mr Colin Snook will be the speaker at the meeting on Wednesday Jenkins Room at 2pm. His topic: An inspired Grandad tramps around Britain. The competition is a holiday souvenir.

Young People: The youngsters are catered for on Tuesdays in the Pretious Sports Hall, with Streetstyle Dance at 6pm and 7pm. If you have any budding dancers interested, please call Beth on 07890 764995.

The Youth Fun Bus will be available from 6.30pm on Wednesday in the Jenkins Room.

Parish Meeting: The annual Parish Meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th April at 7pm – always a good time to catch up with village news.
