Number plate thefts warning

Motorists around Middleton and Elmer have been urged to use tamper-proof screws to stop thieves stealing their vehicle number plates.

A police community support officer in the area, Clive Morge, said a recent increase in the thefts of the registration numbers had been seen.

It could be due to drivers wanting to fool the automatic number plate recognition cameras which ring the town, or dodging the soaring fuel prices by driving off from petrol stations without paying.

He states: If your plates are stuck on or screwed in place with basic screws, consider using tamper-proof screws which can only be screwed in place and are difficult to remove, thus making it difficult for the thief."
