FAN’S VIEW: Crawley Town need more creativity

It should have been so much easier both on the eye and the hearts of the home supporters.

York were by far the least accomplished outfit to visit Broadfield this season but Reds made very heavy weather of finally achieving victory.

It was all the more baffling as the home side had dominated play from the off.

Their football was bright and enterprising and they created a number of chances but they failed to capitalise.

They carried no passengers as a solid team effort did not reveal any individual having a poor game. By half-time we had mullered them – nil nil!

We couldn’t even blame the referee as Charles Breakspear penalised a succession of clumsy fouls by the visitors. T

here wasn’t anything malicious about the Minstermen’s play yet they still ended up with four in the book.

It was justice that they conceded the match from the penalty spot but it shouldn’t have been necessary.

The good burghers of Crawley once again stayed away en masse whilst the visitors brought a very creditable number of noisy fans despite the bizarre early kick-off and their team’s tumble down the table.

Until Simon Walton smacked home his third penalty of the month the few home fans who were present expected to be rueing “the one that got away”.

We have to ask why and I wonder if, despite the improved results of late, whether the management has questions to answer.

Matt Harrold was again invaluable in the role of targetman and was made Man of the Match yet his ever-willing partner Rhys Murphy or the powerhouse Shamir Fenelon both played well enough to merit that recognition.

True Scott Flinders made a remarkable reaction save to deny Fenelon but chances were limited by a packed defence.

More thought was needed in the build-up play but the midfield cried out for a creative playmaker.

Why then did Luke Rooney spend another 90 minutes warming the substitute’s bench?

Why can’t Mark Yates see what his team is missing?

Luton Town are back next Saturday, this time in the FA Cup.

We know they can be beaten and we are showing the team spirit to do just that but we must boss the midfield and provide the strikers with some decent service not just the runs of Gwion Edwards.
