This day is all about music and involves encouraging people to play a new instrument. It is supported by the charity Music for All, who believe that absolutely everyone should have the opportunity to be able to play music.

There are many reasons why music is important to children with special needs. It motivates them, it can captivate their interest and imagination, help them to interact and encourage them to use different skills.

It is also a multi-sensory experience because, not only can they hear the music, but they can also engage with it through dancing, clapping, singing or eye movements.

Many of the children at Chestnut Tree House are non-verbal, but they can still enjoy and make themselves understood through music and sound.

Many of them also enjoy the musical talents of our wonderful staff, some of whom have beautiful voices and are quite skilled musicians.

We have a fantastic music room at Chestnut Tree House, filled with all sorts of instruments and percussion. When I walk past this room, there are always some sounds being created, as well as the sound of laughter.

If staff can still bring a smile to a child’s face it is wonderful for everyone.

These smiles are what make an often difficult job so wonderful. We are all so privileged to be just a small part of these children’s’ lives.

Chestnut Tree House, in Dover Lane, Arundel, cares for over 280 children and young adults from 0-25 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions.
