Public’s surprise at lack of funding

I am often asked to speak to groups of people, individuals or the press.

I have to remind myself that most people have not had contact with the children’s hospice environment and do not understand the world that is so familiar to me.

People struggle to understand the complex needs of the children, the special needs they have and the 24 hour care they require.

It is a world that most of us just hope we never have to experience.

When I am speaking to people I have to explain the difficult lives these families lead and how Chestnut Tree House can help them. The bit most people find hard to grasp is the lack of statutory funding that the hospice receives.

Frequently people assume that, as a children’s hospice, the services we provide must be paid for by the NHS, but sadly we still only receive less than 8% of the money required to cover our running costs from the government.

But very fortunately, we are supported by all the people who live and work in Sussex who continue to give generously to support the work we do. Without this support, we simply wouldn’t be able to help children and families who desperately need us.

Thank you to you all.
