VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Can you offer some of your free time to help others?

The overall responsibility of the chair would be to maintain an overview of the group’s affairs, ensure its financial viability and maintain its financial records and procedures.

As chair you will act as an ambassador and ensure the board functions as a unit to achieve agreed objectives.

There are no set hours, they hold four trustee meetings per year and an AGM; meetings last no more than one hour and the AGM no more than two hours.

Some degree of flexibility would be required.

Arundel Museum was founded in 1964 and is an independent, accredited, museum run totally by volunteers who are members of the Arundel Museum Society.

Arundel Museum exists to acquire, conserve and display objects related to Arundel’s history and heritage.

They want to create a gateway to the past in an exciting and inspiring learning environment which is accessible to all.

The Arundel Museum Society is responsible for running the museum, fundraising, organising activities and events and providing learning opportunities.

They are looking for volunteers to assist with all aspects of social/fundraising events including catering; they hold various events with a view to offering a social environment for all and at the same time raising money for the museum.

Leonard Cheshire Disability is the UK’s leading charity supporting disabled people; every year they support thousands of people in the UK and around the world with physical and learning disabilities to fulfil their potential and live the lives they choose.

The provide services in support of disabled people in the widest context: care at home; supported living; domiciliary support; day services; rehabilitation and respite care.

Companions are needed to spend time with people living in the community who would like to go out on social outings, spend time having a chat and discussions.

Qualifications are not required – a caring, positive and respectful attitude is much more important.

Experience with learning disabilities would be an advantage but full training will be provided.

Impact Advocacy Service provides independent advocacy to adults throughout West Sussex; volunteer advocates protect and promote the rights of people with learning difficulties.

More volunteers are needed who are interested in helping someone who has had fewer opportunities in life and to redress this inequality.

Volunteers are matched up with either an individual or group to help that person/group to have a stronger voice.

The role of the volunteer is to listen to the person’s point of view, and help that person to speak up whenever possible for themselves, or if needed, to speak for them.

The volunteer helps the person to understand their choices and the decisions which they want to make.

Training dates are available and you will be required and hours per week upwards.

Volunteer Advocates have access to professional support, on-going accredited training opportunities and a wealth of information and resources.
