A positive future for our youngsters

LAST week was Youth Work Week, and what a great week it was!

Every night there was an open evening at different locations in Arun, and especially in Littlehampton. These open evenings were held to showcase what our young people have been learning and doing while attending the local youth clubs/centres.

Monday was a band and dance night at The Angmering School; Tuesday was an open evening at Arundel Youth Club with first-aid training and dance sessions; Wednesday evening was street soccer, cooking and dance which was being taught to newcomers by members of local dance group BodyShock Pro at the Flintstone Centre, Littlehampton; and Thursday's open evening was at the youth wing at Littlehampton Community School, demonstrating graffiti painting and material painting and giving the opportunity to interact with teenagers.

The determination of these young people to meet and work together should be commended. They love nothing better than to be able to interact with each, offering help and support, teaching and learning, with enthusiasm and fun thrown in as a bonus.

Most of all, this would not be able to happen without people like Stuart Kingsley, Tim Howell, Gemma Roberts, Lynn Kendall, Rad Kothari, and not forgetting all the support workers and helpers who give up their free time to help.

This week has shown me that society is not always right and not all young people deserve to be labelled or deserve bad publicity. There is a positive future out there for these up-and-coming young people turning into adults, but we must not sit back and forget them.

We must make sure these centres and the support they offer is maintained now and in the future. Congratulations to you all for the great work you have done, thank you for a great week and I am looking forward to 2009.

Liberal Democrat Arun and town councillor for River ward,
