Enjoy fun for the family at ‘Woodland Weekend’

Visitors can learn about woodland crafts in 300 acres of ancient woodland which is SSSI listed (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Hollie Ryan, Visitor Programme Manager at Nymans, predicts a great weekend for children and parents.

She says: “You can toast marshmallows on the campfire, build a den and follow a Geocache trail in the woods.”

Geocaching has become a very popular pastime worldwide and Hollie says it will be an exciting activity at Nymans: “It’s like a big game of hide and seek. We will give visitors a handheld GPS unit and a list of co-ordinates where boxes of ‘treasure’ are hidden. When you get to each location you have to search carefully for a box”.

The weekend is a celebration of the woodland at Nymans.

Children who take part can count the Nymans Woodland Weekend towards their own personal ‘50 things’ challenge. More about the National Trust’s ’50 Things to do before you are 11 and ¾ can be found at www.50things.org.uk

There will also be a chance to learn about traditional woodland crafts and hear from the Nymans team of rangers who manage the woodland.

Chloe Bradbrooke, Senior Ranger, explains why the Nymans woodland is so special.

She says: “The woodland is designated as a SSSI because of its unusual flora and fauna. We have an impressive list of breeding birds and butterflies. You can also see the tallest tree in Sussex, a Giant Redwood.”

The Woodland Weekend on October 4th and 5th is from 10am – 5pm. Normal admission applies.
