Flashbacks of lives

“It’s about a couple. There is an old couple and the same couple as a young couple. You are seeing scenes with the older couple and you are going through flashbacks with their younger selves about 40 years before.

“And they are going through a bit of a crisis for various reasons… But I don’t want to say anything more really because I don’t want to spoil it for you. I do think the less the audience knows about it, the better.”

The piece comes from Frantic Assembly, a company Sam hasn’t worked with before and which he is now pleased to discover - particularly as the Chichester date is a convenient one for Sam who lives just outside Lewes.

“When my partner got pregnant, I was living up in the Wirral. When our son Daniel was about four, we were wondering what to do education-wise. We had moved back to London and we were not particularly happy with it education-wise, and we investigated the Steiner route. We took Daniel to a little (Steiner) kindergarten in Hammersmith and we were really happy with the whole ethos of it.

“When he was six we were looking for the next Steiner school up, and there was a school in Brighton. My partner went down to Brighton to have a look.”

One thing led to another, everything slipped into place and a week later they were living just outside Lewes, with Daniel at school in Brighton. That was 12 years ago now.

“Lewes has been very accommodating to us. It’s quite a strong artistic and liberal, middle-class place.”
