At the punishing Grand National, 40 horses usually take part in an excessively crowded field.

Behind horse racing's glamorous facade lies a catalogue of suffering and death.

Around 400 horses are raced to death every year.

They perish as a result of a broken leg, neck, back or pelvis, spinal injuries, exhaustion, heart attack or burst blood vessels.
