Horsham students create theatrical fantasy looks

Students from Horsham were among those at Central Sussex College who showcased some breath-taking looks at this year’s Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up Fantasy Showcase.

After much deliberation, guest judge Judy Neame announced the winners of the Level 2 category, awarding first prize to Emma Rickman, 20, from Horsham, who transformed her model Faye Trowse, into a stunning Sweeney Todd character. Second prize for the Level 2 category went to Emily Lake, 17, from Horsham, and her out-of-this-world alien look, Jendora.

Emma Rickman commented on her win: “It was a total surprise; I was sure Louise Bournot’s Cheshire Cat look would win!

“I always knew I would do a Tim Burton-inspired look but I chose Sweeney Todd because I like the fashions from that era.”

The students have been working for months to prepare total looks including hair, make-up, costumes and special effects such as prosthetics and bald caps, inspired by fantasy characters from films and mythology.

The students had their work cut out for them to follow the high standard of work showcased by the theatrical hair and make-up team last year.

The event was hosted by Lecturer Sandra Dennis who began the evening by introducing the panel of judges which included Beauty Lecturers Julie Fry and Julie Goacher and guest judge Judy Neame, owner of the prestigious Centre Stage Make-up School.

Each student’s model took to the catwalk alongside their chosen atmospheric music. The looks included: A Power Ranger look by Paige Satchelle, 18, from Horsham; a magical snow fairy look by Michael Baldwin, 18, from Crawley; Louise Bournot, 17, from East Grinstead, transformed her model into a fierce Cheshire Cat; Ione Bowden, 17, Crawley, was inspired by Greek Mythology with her Kympoleia look; Brook Freeman, 18, from Crawley, produced a dazzling Medusa look; Lois Threadgold-Parker, 17, from Horsham, enchanted the audience with her look ‘Ermine – The Snow Queen’; Jessica Bailey, 19, from Horsham, transformed her model into ‘Beetlejuice’; and Georgina Barton, 18, from Crawley, found inspiration in ‘The Hunger Games’.

Judy also awarded the top prizes to the Level 3 students: first prize went to Natasha Hansen, 20, from Crawley, who transformed her brother Curtis Hansen, into the fearsome Darth Maul, for her show-stopping Star Wars inspired look. Second prize was awarded to Elizabeth Whitehead, 19, from East Grinstead, for her impressive Terminator look.

Level 3 winner, Natasha Hansen was also shocked about her success, she commented: “My heart was beating so fast when they were announcing the winner! I really didn’t expect to win because I came fourth last year, but I was much more prepared this time and I really enjoyed working with this theme because I love Star Wars and Darth Maul is my favourite character.”

Hair and Beauty Lecturer Sandra Dennis commented on the students taking part in the showcase: “They are all winners and you can really see the progress they have made from last year. It is so amazing to see what young people are capable of.”
