This is an absolute disgrace and a total insult to these dedicated and compassionate souls who today are staring death in the face in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for these key workers to be given a bonus of £29 a day in line with the UK military who receive this amount as an operational allowance when deployed on specific operations in ‘demanding’ conflicts.

I agree that they should receive this allowance, but this should not detract from the fact that they deserve to earn a so-called real living wage. No reasonable person would argue that they do not deserve this.

One wonders whether our MPs will support a bonus to be paid to those key workers who have just saved the life of their Prime Minister.

MP for Mid Sussex, Mims Davies in her Opinion piece in the same edition entitled ‘Health heroes an inspiration to all of us’ mentions the wonderful grateful words from our Queen and PM too. Words are cheap. It is action that is required to remedy the injustice of denying our key workers a decent, liveable wage for the daily sacrifices they make for us all.
