Lake clarification

IN answer to the question from M.E Murkin (Gazette, November 17), I’d like to clarify Southern Water is not draining Swanbourne Lake.

The lake’s current condition is likely to be a result of low rainfall, which is a problem which has occurred in the past.

In 2004, we worked with the Environment Agency and Arundel Estates on a scheme to improve the condition of the lake.

We also reduced our abstraction licence limit and our abstractions from a groundwater source in the valley upstream of the lake.

However, it was recognised that these schemes would not prevent the lake from drying up in the future as this would always be a risk during a prolonged period of dry weather, such as now.
