Legion not involved

AS officers of the East Preston and Kingston Royal British Legion branch, we wish to comment on a reference made to this branch (Gazette letters, September 2).

The Royal British Legion is a non-political organisation, which includes non-involvement in politics at national or local level.

The branch is a registered charity which administers welfare to ex-service members and their dependants and is also responsible for

Remembrance, including the Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion Club is a limited company which operates under licence to use the name of the RBL.

They are two separate organisations with different committees. This provides a social side open to all members of the community, regardless of military service or not.

To the best of our knowledge, the only involvement in the recent question of the future of the village hall was the use of the Legion

Club to hold a meeting by the Village Hall Action Group. This was because the Legion was the only venue available which could accommodate the number of persons expected to attend the meeting.

The Legion branch has over 1,000 members so it was inevitable that some may have been active on behalf of the action group, but as residents of the village, NOT as representing the Legion.

It is possible that other members of the action group are members of other charitable organisations, but they were not speaking on behalf of their charity. We hope that this clears up any suggestion that "the centre of gravity of opposition to progress might be the local branch of that wonderful organisation the Royal British Legion".
