LETTER: Bus pass cost

When these bus passes were first introduced I had one for my grandson as I used to meet him from school once or twice a week so mum could work. I am a senior citizen so also have a bus pass. As well as access to a car. As the children go everywhere by car it was a nice time for them to use the bus with me and they enjoyed the walk to the bus stop. It also taught them manners and to give respect to senior citizens by giving up their seat when necessary.

I also used to take them to the coast in the holidays on the reduced Metro Rider ticket. This also kept a car from the school gate. When the charge of £50 per card came in I decided it was too expensive. £150 for the three grandchildren so I have gone back to meeting them in the car. With just an occasional trip on the bus.

I realise these things have to be paid for but such a drop in the take up must surely make the point.

I would of course be happy to pay something for the card but £50 per child in households where there are several children is expensive. Perhaps it could be £50 for the first child and a reduced rate for further children.
