The local Green Party has seen a surge in membership during and after the EU Referendum. New and existing members of the party have expressed their deep concern at the referendum result and the lack of any sort of planning to prepare for the consequences. Our country is currently in a deep constitutional crisis as a result of the EU Referendum. Whilst the outcome is decisive, there is much to be concerned about the way the referendum campaign was conducted. Both sides featured Conservative leadership and both sides used misleading statements and disinformation to try and make their case. Following the referendum, neither Leave campaigners nor the government have any clear plan for the future. In this absence of leadership, I believe it is essential that we have a General Election as soon as possible. The government have behaved irresponsibly in calling the referendum without any plan for its aftermath. A crucial decision making process has been completely bungled and a general election would be a good way to start moving back to responsible government.

The local Green Party therefore calls upon the government to call a general election immediately, so that the people of Great Britain can decide who they want to steer this critical phase of our nation’s life.
