LETTER: New camp site for the Guides

I was very impressed and feel confident that the Guides will be happy in their new homes.

As a Guiding Ambassador, I feel privileged and honoured to support and represent such a fantastic group of women and girls.

It is so important that such single sex groups exist as they encourage those members who are not happy or confident in a mixed gender setting. Girls can gain confidence and flourish in an all-female environment.

I found Saturday’s event both exciting and sad. Exciting that the Guides were moving into their new facility; sad because they had said goodbye to Little Trees their campsite in Pease Pottage of some 40 years or so.

A huge thank you needs to be given to all those who were involved in organising and helping with the event on Saturday, which was both well run and organised.

I would like to say It must have been a huge undertaking. There were several interesting and exciting things to do during the day. I managed to toast and eat a marshmallow!

There was also a lunch provided of hot dogs and beans. Very tasty. Thank you to those women who spent their time in the new kitchen cooking. Well done.

Such groups, whether uniform or not, depend on helpers and new leaders coming forward. I suspect all such groups are experiencing a lack of willing adult volunteers.

I know that the Guides – as well as the Scouts and other uniform groups – are experiencing shortages of adult helpers and leaders, meaning that many ‘would-be’ members only get as far as having their names entered onto a list.

So once again, thank you Guides for a great day. I wish you well in the future and hope you will feel as happy and settled as you did at Little Trees. May you enjoy the next 40 years or so in your ‘home’.
