LETTER: Parking in Ifield a top concern

Cllr Peter Smith (Lab, Ifield) is quite right to state that parking is the '˜number one' issue in Ifield (Crawley Observer January 6).

Here in Southgate it also tops the agenda of concerns for local residents and this is probably the case across the whole of Crawley.

Last Tuesday Southgate Community Forum executive committee discussed this matter at its monthly meeting and it was agreed with two of our borough councillors, Jan Tarrant (Con) and Raj Shah (Lab), and our county councillor Michael Jones (Lab), that they would work together to see what could be done to tackle this important issue. Although this is a matter of deep concern to Crawley Borough Council the responsibility to get something done rests firmly with West Sussex County Council (WSCC) in Chichester.

Wakehurst Drive, Forester Row and East Park, to name just three roads, are a case in point. Parking spaces in these roads are at a premium and on occasions are so congested that it is doubtful West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service would get through on an emergency call-out. Moreover, parking on pavements and grass verges not only causes hazards for pedestrians but leaves the latter a churned up unsightly mess.

WSCC needs to get a grip on the issue and draw up an action plan for the long term improvement of parking facilities and capacity in Crawley that will be of benefit to the residents, businesses and our vital emergency services.

Our forum is committed to working with our councillors to get a good outcome for Southgate and I trust that councillors representing all the neighbourhoods of our town will transcend their political differences and work together too. On Saturday March 5 at 2 pm our Forum will be holding a public meeting in St Mary’s Church Hall in Southgate to discuss this and other matters of concern to local residents. All are welcome.
