LETTER: Is this progress?

Not too long ago, I could ring the local council and ask for a repair to be done or a simple replacement. But we have made progress.

Now, you get a machine telling you to ring countless numbers for different departments. I tried and tried. Press this, press that, nothing happened. More numbers, nothing.

In desperation I rang the main line of the council and what did I get?

Another machine telling me to press countless numbers.

After more hassle, I finally got through to an actual human being. He said he would transfer me to the repairs department. And what happened? I was greeted by another list of numbers to press. Eventually I was told (by a machine of course) that I was five minutes in the queue. When this got to 20 minutes, with continuous assurances that I would be dealt with ‘shortly’. I was at screaming pitch. I now have an extended telephone bill and after 50 minutes I got nowhere. And this is progress?

I didn’t appreciate the music blasting my ears either.
