LETTER: Trapped in their own home

Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community, but many feel trapped in their own homes - with almost one in 10 only leaving the house once a month. Alzheimer's Society's new service, '˜Side by Side' in Surrey aims to help people with dementia to stay connected to their communities and keep doing the things they love with the support of a volunteer.

Thanks to a generous grant of £1.3 million from the People’s Postcode Lottery we are expanding the service and are urgently seeking volunteers as we have a waiting list of 30 people with dementia across Surrey who are eagerly waiting to meet someone to share in their interests; this could be going along to the football, taking a stroll in the park or joining a local club together.

By becoming a volunteer, you can enrich not only the life of a person with dementia but could also gain and share invaluable skills and develop new friendships. It’s important, now more than ever, as we see social care being stripped to the bare bones, to do all we can to support people with dementia living in our communities.
