LETTER: Undoubtedly democratic

Following another successful street stall on Saturday 21st May, Crawley Stronger In would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of our town for their on-going support for us in reaching our shared referendum goal.

In addition to this, we would like to take the time to dispel a range of misleading arguments which were being shared by the Leave campaigners.

Firstly, the EU is undoubtedly a democratic organisation – the EU’s priorities are set by the European Council, which is formed by the heads of each state, David Cameron in our case.

MEPs, directly elected by us, form the European Parliament; whilst a representative from each state forms the Commission - our government chooses our representative.

As a nation we enjoy great influence over the decision making process, and our experts are regularly called upon to help create fair and safe European laws, many of which are based upon existing UK law.

Secondly, UK sovereignty is bolstered by our EU membership, as it gives us the opportunity to not only manage internal affairs, but also help control external events which affect our economy.

Given that over half our exports currently go to the EU, it is hugely beneficial to play a key role in the single market, rather than lose influence and be at the mercy of external forces.

Finally, the mass immigration claims are false given that the majority of immigration to the UK still comes from countries outside of the EU.

Also, leaving the EU would not prevent any more migrants from EU countries entering the UK, rather they would have to follow a similar visa process to the migrants currently entering from countries outside of the EU.

Crawley Stronger In strongly urge the Leave campaigns to stop misleading the public, and are happy to address any more questions the public may have about the role of the EU via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
