LETTER: Where is the decent bread?

I had been wondering for some time why the mass produced white bread made today is so universally awful that they no longer even bother to advertise it on TV.

The truth dawned when, due to the panic buying which always precedes a bank holiday, I was forced to park in the service road that runs behind the local shops. There, close behind the grocery store, was a skip containing large scraps of old plaster board. Of course! It was obvious! Modern white bread is made from recycled plaster board. It certainly tastes like it. It sticks to your teeth like plaster of Paris, and, if you do not clean off before it sets, you will no doubt end up with a permanent grin like the White Cliffs of Dover. It follows that the equally awful wholemeal bread must be made from recycled chipboard. Why can’t we have decent bread like they enjoy in the rest of Europe?
