Millais students question PCC

Mrs Bourne was invited to the school by a member of the Sussex Youth Commission to talk about her role and the pilot project currently underway to give young people a voice on policing and crime in the county.

After being interviewed by two keen young reporters, Mrs Bourne addressed a large group of students and opened the floor for questions.

Topics ranged from the number of women in policing, to abusive relationships and the soon to be introduced Clare’s Law, as well as voting rights for prisoners.

Mrs Bourne said: “I was very impressed by the knowledge and interest shown by these young students on very topical issues relating to crime and policing.

This illustrates how important it is that we give young people a voice. Not only may they be future leaders but they are also experts now on what it means to be a young person today and the challenges they face.”

One of the areas Laura, 14, a member of the Sussex Youth Commission and student at Millais School, has identified is drugs and alcohol and in particular “changing how students are educated about drugs and alcohol” in schools.
