Practical skills as well as academic

ALTHOUGH raised in the impoverished era following the First World War, I am grateful to have lived in the progressive county of Middlesex, in a town where there was a co-educational grammar school for academics, as well as a technical college for practical training, fully equipped with all necessary machines for metal working and carpentry, etc., as well as essential courses for general schooling.

When I needed help with maths homework, there was a young lad from the technical college next door who was a great help to me.

In Glenville Road, Rustington, a new detached bungalow was built by two young men from foundations up, and as I watched their progress daily, I was envious of all the skills they brought to bear in the construction.

The result is there to see.

Would it not be of great benefit to channel the energies of the young, both males and females, into learning such necessary skills, by setting up workshops such as were in the technical college of yore, manned by craftsmen, and inviting the youngsters to enjoy the useful creative facilities in their spare time?

E. Harvey,

Shirley Close,

Rustington

Editor's note: I went to the opening of workshops along these very lines a couple of years ago at Littlehampton. A progress report, in the form of a letters page contribution, would no doubt interest readers, if those running the courses would like to write to us.

NOTE: All letters must include a name and address which can be withheld by request.
