Resignation reason

AFTER being mentioned in your front page article (Gazette, September 2), I emphasise that my resignation as secretary of the Village Hall Foundation was not a reaction to the result of the poll.

I resigned before the poll, after the last management meeting, when a vote was taken on whether to submit the building proposal, jointly with the parish council, to the Charity Commission for approval.

The motion was carried by a narrow majority and the proposal duly submitted. On the main grounds that the parish council office has no entitlement to be placed on this land and the plan is aesthetically displeasing, as well as far too costly, my vote was against the proposal, so I could only disassociate myself.

The current situation is no disaster. Yes, time, effort and money have been spent, but valuable lessons have been learned and significant facts have emerged.

The village hall complex is currently running smoothly and in a good state of repair, so its facilities are enjoyed by many hirers.

The executive committee can be re-grouped to keep the village hall as the vital asset to our community that it has become.

The Warren Recreation Ground was bequeathed in 1943 "as a recreation and sports ground for the benefit of the said Parish of East Preston", which must always be borne in mind.
