Last week I travelled by bus for the first time since lockdown began.

On both journeys several passengers boarded without masks and were not queried or challenged.

The most flagrant example was a woman who boarded at the Ocklynge School stop, waved her unworn mask at the driver and said, “I generally manage to get this on before the bus arrives!”

She then went upstairs still holding her mask.

I had observed her before the bus pulled up at the stop and she had made no attempt to put her mask on – which in any case takes only a few seconds.

I can understand a driver’s reluctance to engage in any confrontation – they have done a brilliant job over the past few months and have quite enough to contend with – and I accept that some people are exempt from these requirements but these selfish idiots who think inconvenient rules apply only to other people should be called to account.
