Tunnel vision

I fully understand the local issues regarding the building of the A27 bypass around Arundel, especially if there is any threat to ancient woodlands and other such beauty in the countryside.

We simply cannot continue to bulldoze our way over our countryside, destroying it by building vast housing developments and cutting our way through ancient woodlands, destroying thousands of years of habitat et al.

Quite frankly, this bypass should have been built many years ago and our current politicians are to blame.

If we stop our current politicians squandering our money, we can easily afford the cost of building this bypass, including incorporating a tunnel.

The successful Hindhead bypass, which is approximately four miles (6.7 km) long, includes a tunnel which is over a mile long (1.8km). I estimate that the bypass connecting the west of Arundel to the east of Arundel, meeting the A27 dual-carriageway already in place, could be approximately two to three miles.

The final cost of the Hindhead bypass was £371m or thereabouts. One does not have to be a Rhodes scholar to work out that if we constructed a tunnel around Arundel to the south which is, say, two miles long, but long enough for the meeting of west and east, none of the issues raised would be an issue any more.

Even if the cost of this A27 bypass was £600m, about double that of the Hindhead bypass, including incorporating a tunnel or tunnels as part or all of it, we would be able to afford this in just 12 days if we stopped paying £50m every day to the EU.

One does not have to be a rocket scientist to work out that we are better off spending our money for the benefit of our country and our people.

The question remains: Why is it that the local Conservative MP has failed his constituents on this very important issue? But let’s face it, he doesn’t care about the local people or the countryside, nor does his Conservative party!

Please remember that we pay at least £15bn to the EU every year and in addition we pay out £12bn in foreign aid. Let’s stop the current politicians squandering our money and spend it where is urgently needed.

The A27 bypass is urgently needed around Arundel, Angmering, Worthing to Shoreham.

Better off out of the EU!
