We seem at last to be moving towards a responsible compromise in the cycling debate, vis a vis the seafront.

The suggestion now is that the roadway should be adapted, leaving the promenade for what its name implies: a pathway for pedestrians.

I have tried several times to point out in these pages how the process has been adopted along the promenade at Southend-on-Sea for some ten years.

Incidentally, although an avowed admirer of Annemarie Field, she is incorrect in suggesting that walkers are not physically affected by cyclists on pavements.

Many years ago you had a regular correspondent, the local author Cecile Woodford.

One of her letters reported a recent spell in hospital after being knocked down by a cyclist on a pavement.

The nurses there told her they regularly received patients with injured wrists, arms and legs as a result of the same misfortune.

It is encouraging that perhaps cyclists are more considerate than 25 years ago.

But it is hardly the point.
