Why Sue says ‘Yes’ to Alternative Vote

LAST week Geoffrey Goodsell asked me to tell him through your paper how much the referendum on voting reform is costing.

What price the ability to vote? I don’t know the figure, but the referendum is on the same day as parish and district elections, so the cost won’t be as high as if held separately.

I would ask is the cost of changing to a fairer system worth it?

Is the cost to stop forever the continuation of safe seats for MPs worth it?

Especially as it has been shown that the safer the seat, the more likely it is that the MP abused the expenses system.

Is the cost worth the opportunity to make your MP work harder for your support? I think so.

Yes, democracy has a cost, but it should never be devalued just because it has a price tag.

That’s why I am supporting the AV campaign. It’s a small step towards creating a better democracy that reflects the modern world.

And to quote Oscar Wilde: What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
